The greatest joy on the dreariest days of winter are the cardinals who appear as a bright splash to cheer us. The female is as charming as the male, and the immature cardinals with their orange feathers are irresistible. They are skittish and are easily driven away by the nasty little finches that I call binches (bitchy finch). But they do not retreat for long. My memories of my grandmother are of her gazing at her cardinals outside her window. I am now photographing them. I wish I could present her with a photo... but she passed away just weeks from her 103rd birthday - many, many years ago.
